More About the New MOHI School

Thanks to the generosity of the local Turkana tribe, MOHI has been granted land for the new school. Last year, our $10,000 gift helped construct the perimeter fence, laying the foundation for this vital project. Additionally, funds from a non-profit made it possible to drill a well and will build the first block of classrooms, toilets/latrines, temporary staff huts, and a temporary kitchen. This will likely be done when our team arrives this summer.

However, Nanam has an overwhelming number of children, and one classroom block isn’t enough. More than 60 children will have to squeeze into each classroom without further expansion.

Our $250,000 contribution will help:

  • Construct a permanent kitchen to serve the growing student body.
  • Build staff housing units to accommodate teachers and support staff.
  • Fund additional classrooms, ensuring more children have a place to learn as resources continue to come in.

“It will be a great miracle especially in ensuring the cooks have a safe kitchen to work, children have enough space in additional classrooms, and not being so squeezed and the staff have a safe space to live as they dedicate their lives to serving the Nanam community.”

- Mary Kamou, Executive Director

“Some of the things the funds will build may not sound high priority to our American ears—like staff housing. But they are in the desert. At another similar school, the teachers sleep in thatched huts with small clubs by their beds to kill snakes and scorpions that come in during the night. The teachers are college graduates, many who grew up in the city, and MOHI wants them to have reasonable living spaces.”

- Dick Alexander, Partnership Liaison
